The PGY1 office space is located in our inpatient pharmacy. Each resident has their own desk, which has a docking station for their laptop.

Do residents get a VA laptop? Is remote access available?

Residents are provided with a laptop. Remote access is available using this laptop. Each laptop is also equipped with a softphone that allows residents to use their VA extension if telework is necessary

What is parking like on campus? Is there an additional fee for parking?

Residents receive a parking pass. All parking is on campus, there is no off site parking required. There is no fee for parking on campus.

Do residents select their own residency project or is it assigned to them?

A list of projects is sent to residents after the match. Residents generally select from this list, however, if a resident has an idea for a project, we will work with the resident to determine if the project is feasible

Are residents required to travel away from the main campus for rotations?

The vast majority of rotations are completed at our main hospital campus in Augusta. Residents may elect to complete a part of their ambulatory care rotation at one of our community based outpatient clinics (Portland, Lewiston, Bangor) based on availability.

What is the teaching certificate like?

Our teaching certificate program is currently completed through MCP. In the 2020-2021 residency year, the program is 1 hour every other week from August through December, and is completely virtual. The program requires the resident to complete various teaching/precepting experiences throughout the year.

What is the staffing requirement? Is there any on-call requirements? Night shifts?

Residents staff in the inpatient pharmacy every third weekend from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM for the entirety of their residency. Outpatient staffing is a 12 week requirement, in which the resident staffs from 3:30-5:30 PM two days a week. Residents always staff with another pharmacist present. There is no on-call requirement. There are no required night/evening shifts.

How are rotations selected for the year?

Upon starting residency, each resident meets with the residency director to determine their initial goals and likely plans for after residency. We create the first quarter rotation plan based on these initial meetings. After that, quarterly meetings are held to plan out subsequent quarter schedules.

Are residents dual appointed during their residency?

After obtaining licensure, we pursue dual appointment for our residents. Based on staffing needs, and the resident’s progress with staffing, opportunities may exist for utilizing the dual appointment to pick up additional shifts in the inpatient and/or outpatient pharmacy in the second half of the year.
